Dying for a game?

The news of a poker game that went terribly wrong in Florida is splashed all over the internet. Apparently three friends were enjoying a friendly Friday night poker game, and all three of them ended up losing their lives; shot dead over losing hands.

It seems the murderer had been playing with the three friends earlier in the day and had lost all his money. In an attempt to retrieve his cash, three people ended up dead. The accused had searched the murder victims’ pockets for cash.

This set me thinking. In what sort of world are we living where harmless recreational games can end in murder? Everyone knows the stakes involved when playing poker; you win some you lose some! That’s part of the fun! Pitting your wits against an opponent and trying to come out on top. But murder? When you play with our online casino, I can’t guarantee that you’ll win every time. But I can at least guarantee you’ll be safe.

I wonder: as technology improves, will we move towards a complete online existence for its own safety? We can already shop, bank, play games and communicate. Already bars and clubs can be unsafe, but friendly poker games? What do you think the future of online gaming holds? Do you feel safe in a landbased casino?
