Poker book review - Take Me to the River by Peter Alson

This book is all about Alson’s 2005 World Series of Poker experience. Written like a travelogue, it takes you through the highs and lows of every poker players dream tournament. All poker players fantasize about making it to the big time – to the prestigious WSOP!

So you’d think this would be a riveting read, wouldn’t you? Well…firstly, as all WSOP fans would know, Alson hardly made an impact in the tournament anyway - so what makes him think we’re even interested at all? It’s hardly the greatest story ever told:

POKER PLAYER GOES TO WSOP AND DOESN’T GET ANYWHERE

No! Really? For this reason, the angst just doesn’t quite cut it. It may come across as passionate to some, but it was more teenage turmoil than the trials and tribulations of a professional player in my eyes. But that’s the name of the game! You win some you lose some.

Although the poker information is decent, the book on the whole is at best mediocre. This book would probably suit a real beginner – and maybe even a complete fanatic - but I personally found it difficult to get into – or enjoy.

Your Winning Strategy to Video Poker – The Alternative to Slots by Raymond Clarke

OK, I’m holding my sides. This video poker paperback book has got to be the biggest (A4) and skinniest book I’ve ever laid eyes on – think ABC books made out of skimpy paper but without as many pages…

I’m sorry, but the print is definitely above 12 pt in size and there’s more of white space. There are 35 pages in all, and this includes several full pages filled with absolutely nothing!!!! Just big white pages. There are four pages for notes at the back of the book – notes on what exactly? Even the title doesn’t make sense! Winning strategy to Video Poker???

In general, this book comes across as cheap and nasty – but the surprise is that it isn’t! It cost more than you’d generally want to pay for any book – never mind one that is teeny tiny and in short – pretty useless. Perhaps it should have been entitled – Your Winning Strategy to Video Poker - The Alternative to playing is to sell you this book and get quids in…?

It looks like something written for the web that accidentally got printed. It’s just my opinion but…is this guy just repeating himself? I’ve never known anyone be able to explain that video poker strategy has to be personalized in so many words, over so many pages. The scary thing is though - i think he believes himself! Sorry Mr Clark but it’s just not cutting it for me. OK – I think Ive made myself clear. Buy it if you want – I wouldn’t.

Baccarat For the Clueless By John May - A Paperback Baccarat Book

There aren’t many books out there on baccarat to be honest and so I thought this a good place to start for a review. I’m not really sure why baccarat seems to have come off badly in the publishing industry - it’s a popular enough game and it’s a traditional favourite. Perhaps it’s because there’s so much online – and for free? Maybe it’s because our Casino.com strategy guides are so good that no one need look anywhere else? Anyways…

This Baccarat for the Clueless book is pretty decent – which surprised me. Call me cynical but most of the books I find out there just repeat the same info and change the name of the game. And so, I expected this one to be a bit banal.

I guess most books on casino games are going to be pretty limited due to the amount of chance involved (you can take that shocked look off your face!), but this one covers the latest baccarat systems and throws some facts into the mix – spiced up by the writer’s obvious appreciation for the game.

May seems like an honest enough guy – he makes it clear that you can’t win every time but does offer some nifty suggestions on how to reduce the house edge and improve.
